Location
With a distance of 5 nautical miles on the sea to the old port, Penglai Eastern Port is situated at 37 ° 49 ′ 24 N and 120 ° 51 ′ 21 ″ E on the southern shore of Bohai Strait , 8 km east of Penglai city. With deep water and ideal geologic conditions, this port , a first-class open port of the nation, has the navigable conditions for vessels of 10000 DWT without any dredging.
Penglai Eastern Port enjoys perfect land and water transportation conditions. On land , It is only 59 km to Longkou City, 30 km to Yantai City and is connected with all the main highways of the province . On water, it enjoys a distance of only 6 nautical miles to Changdao Port, 39 nautical miles to Longkou Port, 42 nautical miles to Yantai Port, 65 nautical miles to Lvshun Port, 89 nautical miles to Dalian Port, 139 nautical miles to Qinhuangdao Port, 190 nautical miles to Tianjin Port, and 260 nautical miles to Qingdao Port.
Port Highway in Penglai Eastern Port was completed together with the new port project. Designed to be a first-class 6-lane highway with a width of 30 meters, it boasts a designed daily vehicle capacity of 20000 vehicle-times. Port Highway can be directly incorporated into network with 206 National Highway (now 206 Expressway is just under construction), 024 Provincial Highway (Penglai-shuiji) and 093 Provincial Highway(Penglai-zhaili). It also forms a transportation network with the other main highways in Yantai and even Shandong. Besides, Penglai - Qingdao section of Tongsan Expressway which is the main artery expressway from north to south has already been open to traffic. In addition, Dezhou-Longkou-Yantai Railway runs through Penglai City, which is under construction and will be linked with Penglai Eastern Port by a special port branch line as required by Penglai Government.
二、 Status in quo
As a local port jointly set up by the State, Shandong Province and Penglai City, Penglai Eastern Port formally went into operation after acceptance inspection in December 1995. Currently, the port boasts one break-bulk berth of 10,000DWT (with the alongside depth of -10 m), one of 5000 DWT (with the alongside depth of - 8 m), one of 3000DWT and one of 1000 DWT. The port mainly undertakes storage, loading and unloading of domestic and foreign trade cargos, achieving a port throughput of 5.29 million tons in 2001. Boasting 2 Ro-Ro berths of 5000 DWT with the alongside depth of –7m, Penglai Eastern Port also carries out passenger/ Ro-Ro traffic business from Penglai to Dalian, deploying 3 large-scaled Ro-Ro vessels which were imported from Japan in 1998. Providing safe, comfortable and quick service, they are busy travelling along the golden water way from Penglai to Dalian, contributing a lot to the material and cultural communication between Shandong Peninsula and Liaodong Peninsula. In 2001, the port transported 50,000 Ro-Ro vehicles and passengers of 1.55million man-times. In 2002, Penglai Eastern Port started the construction of a timber terminal of 35000 DWT. The hydro-structure of the berth, designed according to the standards of berth of 50000 DWT, has already been completed. Upon completion, the timber terminal will greatly increase the handling capacity of Penglai Eastern Port.
三、 Nature and Functions of the Port
Penglai Eastern Port is a medium-scaled local port with an aim to serve economic and social development of Penglai City and its surrounding areas. Its transportation business will focus on passenger traffic and Ro-Ro traffic, transportation of timber, cement, coal, processed oil, frozen fish and break-bulk cargos as well as building materials and machinery. Its main functions are listed as follows:
Developing sea transportation business so as to further rationalize the layout of the ports along Jiaodong Peninsula.
2 、Accelerating the development of foreign-oriented industrial processing area of Penglai City, developing coastal processing industry.
3 、As the future hub of rail, highway and sea transportation facilitating the development of passenger traffic, storage, trade, transportation agency and information service.
4 、Serving the economic development and further opening up of Penglai City, Changdao County, and Qixia City.
5 、Adjusting the functions of the city, relocating the priority of urban development to the eastern part, enhancing the development of industry and society, making the overall layout of Penglai City more rational.
6 、Developing passenger traffic, accelerating the development of tourism.
7 、Making full use of the advantage that it has shortest distance to Liaodong Peninsula on sea, focusing on the development of ferry berth, accelerating Ro-Ro transportation to increase economic and social benefits.
